NTU Kicked off Industry-Academia Collaboration with Japan on Carbon Sequestration.
The delegation from STRIDE-C, NTU, and National Dong Hwa University visited Japan CCS Co., Ltd.
In order to accelerate Taiwan’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, NTU is actively having conversations about combining NTU’s energy in innovative research and the development of industrial technology to fulfill University Social Responsibility (USR).
NTU recently established the Science and Technology Research Institute of DE-Carbonization (STRIDE-C). President Chung Ming Kuan led a delegation of seven representatives from STRIDE-C, the NTU Department of Geosciences, the NTU Institute of Oceanography, and National Dong Hwa University to Japan in mid-December 2022. The delegation visited Japan’s world-leading organizations, including CCS Co., Ltd. (JCCS), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), and Kochi University (KU), to engage in further discussions on carbon emissions issues.
President Kuan stated that sustainable development is a common challenge for human existence, and it is also a significant driving force for maintaining Taiwan’s economic and social development and stability. The adoption of negative emission technologies used in carbon storage and the capture of geothermal energy as transformational green energy are the keys to Taiwan’s large-scale reduction of carbon emissions.
Through the establishment of STRIDE-C, NTU managed to leverage its solid foundation of knowledge and technology, gather research and development energy, and actively invest in talents to accelerate Taiwan’s sustainable development and implementation of carbon net zero measures, assuming the role of a leader who brings innovation to the society.
Through this meaningful visit to the three important institutions in Japan, NTU not only learned the macro vision and the determination of investment in carbon emission technologies shown by the Japanese government, academia, and industry in research related to underground and marine geology, but also exchanged thoughts on the related experience and agreed to facilitate opportunities for technology exchange in the future. NTU will continue to deepen its partnership with these institutions, demonstrating its commitment and contribution to sustainable development.
