NTU 90th Anniversary: Towards a Century of Excellence

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of NTU. We have been celebrating this significant milestone under the slogan of “NTU 90: Towards a Century of Excellence,” along with a logo and graphic design featuring “NTU 90.” This year’s celebratory events are of great variety: festivities, academic events, sporting events, alumni activities, international exchange activities, campus tours, art events, student activities, college spotlight, and publication/souvenir sales.

The 90th Anniversary Celebration Ceremony was held in the NTU Sports Center on November 15. The event was presided over by NTU Interim President Tei-Wei Kuo (郭大維), and attended by former presidents, top administrators, alumni in Taiwan and abroad, international guests from partner universities, and NTU staff and students. President Kyosuke Nagata (永田恭介) of Tsukuba University and President/Vice-Chancellor Bernd Engler of the University of Tübingen were invited to give remarks at the ceremony.

One of the highlights at the ceremony was the recognition of the eight winners of the Distinguished Alumni Awards: Ching-Hsi Perng (彭鏡禧), Norden E. Huang (黃鍔), Burn J. Lin (林本堅), Andrew H.-J. Wang (王惠鈞), Yuan-Tsong Chen (陳垣崇), Chin-Tsai Fan (范進財), Liang-Jun Han (韓良俊), and Andrew K. C. Chan (陳嘉正). Three Social Devotion Special Awards (two individuals, one group) were respectively conferred to student of anthropology Chia-Shen Tsai (蔡佳昇), student of psychology Li-Yu Chen (陳力瑜), and NTU Shanfu. Moreover, 17 Outstanding Youth Awards were conferred at the ceremony.

Interim President Kuo appreciated the distinguished alumni for their social contributions and fulfilment of the University motto—“Integrity, Diligence, Fidelity, and Compassion,” and recognized the award-winning students for their devotion and commitment to social services. Having spearheaded the development and reforms of Taiwan, NTU now places internationalization and innovative education as primary goals in its agenda to strengthen students’ global mobility, equip them with cross-disciplinary expertise, and build leadership in them. Dr. Kuo also encouraged NTU students to show the courage to create a brighter future, stick to their goals, and make the world a better place.

In addition to the ceremony, NTU hosted the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) 24th Annual General Meeting and 43rd Board of Directors Meeting during November 13-14, as well as a Presidents’ Forum on November 14. At the meeting and forum, presidents of leading universities from countries worldwide shared their visions for university governance, social responsibility, and impact.

Student and art events also played an important part in the celebration. Our student clubs and community members in the neighborhoods joined hands to organize a colorful school fair on November 10-11. A series of experimental concerts and an exhibition were held under the theme of “NTU and the Beyond.” In celebration of the 90th anniversary, NTU Press also selected and republished a feature collection of 10 seminal monographs and textbooks written by our faculty or alumni.
